To start with behavior reduction, I use individual punch cards or add a marble to their group jar for positive reinforcement for expected behavior to work on prevention. I use proximal seating to my desk to work on reducing behaviors that are disruptive in the classroom.
Self-Regulation
I want my students to be able to have self-regulation skills so they can use those independently. We work as a class to take deep breaths together, stretch by their desks, and do brain breaks to work on regulating our emotions. Students are learning these skills to take a break when they need to, and they have access to the calm corner when they need to take a full break away from their desks and can use the multitude of resources in the calming corner. I want my students to have the self-regulation skills when it comes to school as well. Most assignments have reflections at the end so students can look back at their learning and see what they did well on. As a class, we do checkmark for every time the students get off task during an independent assignment. These check marks are kept confidential since it is just for students to be able to measure how frequently they are getting off task independently. I think it is good for my students to be learning positive self talk as part of their self-regulation for dealing with lack of confidence. My students say one positive thing about themselves every time they walk into the classroom. This helps build their confidence and work to make the classroom associated with positivity.
Unexpected Behaviors
When unexpected behaviors occur in the classroom, I start by having a conversation with the student where we talk about expected behaviors and redirect the unexpected behaviors. If the behavior continues, I will give them a punch card that is made for and used when they exhibit the desired behavior. I start with positive reinforcement on the ideal behavior. If the behavior does not improve with their punch card, I will confer with their parent to discuss the behavior that is occurring and the method I have currently implemented. I will hope that the parent will have a conversation willingly and openly where we can discuss their methods when dealing with this behavior. If the parent does not reply or want to be involve, I will see if there are other interventions, I can implement in the classroom such as proximal seating, and work to see if I can have a honest conversation with the student where we come to an agreement with an intervention method such as them using a personal self-regulation method paired with a reinforcement. I strive to meet unexpected behaviors in the class with differentiated intervention that I work to develop with the parent to have the intervention methods tailored for each student's needs.
