Classroom Set-Up

This is our classroom design. We have our desks and bean bag chairs the children can use during free reading and individual work. There is also a carpet area where each child has their own square for whole class activities and language arts. There is also a small carpet area where students can go when they need to calm their body during the day, or to lounge on the bench during independent work or reading time. The desks are arranged so students sit in pairs to build classroom community, but also have individual baskets so students have their own area to keep their books and stationery.

Classroom Rules

I will respect others by using my listening ears, indoor voices, and raising my hand.

I will always do my best when I go to school.

I will use kind words and be inclusive to others.

I will ask for help when I need it and give help to others when they ask.

These are the rules for our classroom. During the first day of class, we will have a class discussion on how our class should look, feel, sound. We will come up with a list for each section as a class. We will then see how the lists we made are involved with our class rules and add more if we find it necessary to include more. Forming rules as a class and developing class expectations is important for students to understand the importance of class rules.

Students need to use listening ears to be able to hear instructions and follow directions when it could be dangerous not to. Students need to use indoor voices to be respectful to others. It keeps our class at a lower volume for students who have different sensory needs. Students need to raise their hands to be respect to their peers who might want to share an idea, ask a question, or answer a question. I expect all my students to do the best they can do. I believe in my students and they know that because I expect their best. Students will use kind words and be inclusive to others because we do not judge our classmates and understand that people can have hard days. Students will ask for help when they are confused because it will help them learn and there could be other students who are confused on the same thing. We are all learning and having questions is part of the process.

Teaching Classroom Rules

Introduction:

On the first day of school, we will go over all of the classroom rules. Classroom rules will be on a poster in the room as well as the four brilliant bees (be kind, be safe, be respectful, and be responsible). We will also do a class discussion prior to introducing the class rules where we talk about how our class should feel, look, and sound. After we write those out on anchor charts, we will pin them to the wall and notice how our class rules fit into making our class the way it should feel, look, and sound.

Teach:

We will be having a class discussion to formulate our expectations of the class. Then I will explain the importance of class rule and what our class rules are. We create as a class a poster that reminds us how our class should look, feel, and sound. We will see how following our rules will make our class look, feel, and sound the way we want it to. This will help us understand the important of our class rules and why we need to follow them.

Practice:

For the first two weeks of school, we will start every day going over our class mission statement and our class rules. This will remind my students at the start of the day what the rules are and why it effects our behavior. We will also do a small project where students will get a poster and divide it in four. They will then put a drawing and a picture describing the rule. That will become a physical reminder of what the rules are.

Reinforce:

When students do a good job of following the rules, such as when student do a good job at being respectful by raising their hands and using their inside voices during a lesson, then the class will get a petal added to the class flower. Once they reach 10 petals, the class will get a reward that was greed upon by the class before a petal was rewarded. Since being kind is part of our class rules, we will make a kind chain. A student will get a piece of paper that says the kind act I saw them do, then they will loop it around an existing paper link and make a chain. We will continue this throughout the year reminding students to be kind and inclusive.

Monitor:

Each Friday, we will do a weekly review at the end of the week. We will see if we were kind friends, worked our best, and generally followed the rules. If we did not meet all of those requirements, we would create new goals for the following week. The following Monday we will review what goals we made and how we will improve as a class.

Correct:

When unexpected behaviors occur, students will first be reminded what the rules are and why it is important to follow them. If the behavior is consistent, I will mention it to the student's parents/guardians about having a conversation about why we follow the rules. I will also ask if this is a consistent behavior for the student at home, school, and other places. If it is a consistent behavior, I will implement individual punch card for the student. Every time they perform the expected behavior, they will receive a punch or if they self-correct after an unexpected behavior they will also receive a punch. If it is not a consistent behavior, the punch card will still be implemented, but there will additional conversation with both student and parent/guardian about if there are changes happening in their life which is causing the behavior.

Monitor Again:

The class flower rewards will be a constant throughout the year. Individual punch cards will vary from student to student. When unexpected behaviors start students will receive a punch card. If unexpected behaviors continue, more conversations with parents/guardians will happen and we will work together to time about different ideas to reinforce expected behaviors.
